There are two kinds of people that will cherish School Holidays, students and teachers. Penang or better known as ‘The Pearl of the Orient’ is the best place to spend school holidays, especially if you are a food craze.
‘Roti paun’ or ‘Roti Benggali’ (Sikh has got nothing to do with it) can be found easily at Patchee Bakery.
The Bakery that still produce bread in an authentic style and taste better than Gardenia (forget High Five). Its sell fresh from the oven, and you can choose to have the crust remove or remain.
If you happen to visit someone in Penang Hospital, on the way you will find a mamak stall selling ‘mee goreng’ and ‘air soya’. Mee goreng, mee rebus and pasembor (rojak as we call it here) will cost you RM2.20 per plate (with bean curd, cucur udang and sotong sambal). Mee goreng and mee rebus prepared using charcoal. Don’t you want to try?
Next to it is ‘air soya’ stall and a glass will cost you only RM0.60. That is cheap. You can’t get that price here. Even mineral drink will at least cost you RM1.00!.
A visit to Penang won’t be complete if you don’t try ‘nasi kandar’. People will suggest to you various locations and don’t be fooled by all those grand establishment like Pelita and Kayu. Ask the locals and they will tell you the best ‘nasi kandar’ in Penang is Nasi Kandar Flat Kampung Melayu, Air Itam.
After Suboh Prayer (6.30 am), you should be there. Early bird catches the worm, and early ‘makan seeker’ will have the opportunity too choose. Even if you arrive at this moment, one of the huge ‘periuk kenduri cap buaya mulut ternganga’ is already empty.
You will be lost because you will be spoiled by the choices. Ask your appetite and forget your diet. Just like the French says ‘Bon Apetite’ and Orang Melaka says 'Muntah ke Darah'.
At night you can try Amir Char Keow Teow, situated behind Petani Road Police Station, close to red omnibus transit corner. It’s cheap and tasty.
Sheikh Imran Hosein
While staying in Penang, I had the opportunity to listen to Sheikh Imran Hosein’s talk, entitled ‘WILL ISRAEL ATTACK IRAN?’. The talk which was held at Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang on 1st of June, has gathered crowd from all walks of life. The talk comprises of histories, relevant facts and the session was filled with precious knowledge. A great talk and it was delivered by a great speaker. I wish he will come to Kuala Lumpur one day. Sheikh Imran Hosein‘s visit was arranged by Islamic Propagation Society International (Penang).
